Zanzibar Honeymoon Guide: Beaches, Resorts & Local Tips
Zanzibar has quietly become the honeymoon destination of choice for young Algerian couples, and the reasons stack up neatly: turquoise water that genuinely matches the brochure photos, a Swahili Muslim culture that feels familiar and welcoming, abundant halal food, world-class diving and snorkeling, and — crucially — visa-on-arrival for Algerian passport holders. A $50 fee in fresh US dollar bills, a yellow fever vaccination certificate, and you're through immigration in under twenty minutes.
Best months. Zanzibar has two dry seasons that suit honeymooners equally well. June through October is the cooler, breezier dry season — perfect for active couples, with daytime temperatures around 28°C. December through February is the hotter dry season with calmer seas and the best underwater visibility for diving and snorkeling. Avoid the long rains (mid-March through May) when many smaller resorts close.
Where to stay. The east coast is divided into distinct zones. Matemwe and Pwani Mchangani in the north-east are calm, upscale and ideal for honeymooners — long stretches of white sand and lagoon swimming inside the reef. Kendwa, on the north-west tip, is the only beach where the tide stays high enough to swim all day. Paje and Jambiani on the south-east attract a younger, kite-surfing crowd. For privacy, the offshore islands of Mnemba and Chumbe are extraordinary.
Don't skip Stone Town. Even if you've come for beach time, dedicate at least one full day to Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed old town. A guided two-hour walk takes you past Arab and Indian merchant houses, the spice market, the former slave-trade memorial, and the birthplace of Freddie Mercury. End the afternoon with a sunset dhow cruise off Forodhani Gardens.
Halal food and prayer. Zanzibar is 99% Muslim, so halal food is the default, mosques are everywhere, and prayer times are called publicly. Most resorts arrange iftar during Ramadan and many can organize private nikah blessings on the beach for honeymooners who want a symbolic ceremony.
Day trips worth booking: snorkeling at the Mnemba Atoll (dolphins are common in the early morning), a spice farm tour, a half-day at Jozani Forest to see the endemic red colobus monkeys, and the Safari Blue full-day boat trip from the south coast. For couples who want to extend the honeymoon, a 3–4 night safari in Tanzania's northern circuit pairs beautifully with Zanzibar.
