Algeria Visa Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know
Algeria has historically had one of the more paperwork-heavy visa regimes in North Africa, but the situation has improved dramatically over the last three years. Since the launch of the official e-visa portal in 2023, most leisure travelers can now apply entirely online instead of queuing at a consulate. That said, the rules still vary significantly by nationality, purpose of visit and region of travel, and getting it right on the first try makes the difference between landing in Algiers stress-free and being turned around at the gate.
The standard tourist e-visa allows stays of up to 30 days and is single-entry. It is currently available to passport holders from roughly 60 countries, including most of the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and several Gulf states. Applications go through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal (visa.mfa.gov.dz), processing takes 3 to 10 working days, and the fee — paid online by card — ranges from $30 to $90 depending on nationality and reciprocity.
A complete file includes: a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended arrival date with two blank pages, a recent passport-style photo on a white background, a confirmed return flight ticket, proof of accommodation (a hotel booking confirmation or, if you're staying with friends or family, a notarized invitation letter — known locally as an attestation d'hébergement), proof of sufficient funds in the form of a recent bank statement, and travel insurance covering the full duration of your stay. Business travelers additionally need an invitation letter from the Algerian company, registered with the local Chamber of Commerce.
If you are planning to visit the Algerian Sahara — Tamanrasset, Djanet, the Tassili n'Ajjer plateau, the Tadrart or any of the deep south wilayas — there is a second, equally important requirement: you must book your trip through a licensed Algerian travel agency. The agency issues an official tourist authorization (autorisation de circulation touristique) that you'll be asked to present at military checkpoints along the way. Several nationalities benefit from visa-free or visa-on-arrival access. Citizens of Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, Libya, Mali, Syria, Yemen and most Gulf Cooperation Council countries can enter without a prior visa for short stays — though entry is always at the discretion of the border officer, and a return ticket plus proof of accommodation are still advisable.
A few practical tips: passport photos must be recent (within six months) and meet ICAO standards — phone selfies on white walls are routinely rejected. Hotel bookings should be fully prepaid and refundable. If your itinerary includes both the north and the Sahara, mention both in your application. And finally, always carry a printed copy of your e-visa approval as well as the digital version.
