Istanbul + Cappadocia in 7 Days: A Perfect First Trip to Turkey
Turkey is one of the easiest international trips an Algerian family can plan. Algerian passport holders enjoy visa-free entry for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period, direct flights from Algiers to Istanbul run multiple times daily on Turkish Airlines and Air Algérie with a flight time of just over four hours, and the entire country is extraordinarily Muslim-traveler friendly.
Recommended split: four nights in Istanbul, three nights in Cappadocia. Internal flights between Istanbul and Kayseri or Nevşehir take about 90 minutes and cost €40–€80 one-way when booked two to three weeks ahead on Pegasus, AnadoluJet or Turkish Airlines. The overnight bus is an option but eats a full day — fly.
Istanbul, day one. Base yourself in Sultanahmet. Spend the morning at the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque (free to enter — dress modestly, women should bring a scarf), then walk to the Basilica Cistern and lunch in the streets behind it. Afternoon at Topkapı Palace including the Harem section.
Istanbul, day two. Grand Bazaar in the morning. Walk down to the Spice Bazaar in Eminönü, cross the Galata Bridge, and explore Karaköy and Galata Tower in the afternoon. Dinner in Karaköy at one of the meyhane-style restaurants.
Istanbul, day three. Bosphorus ferry to the Asian side — disembark at Kadıköy for lunch in the Moda neighborhood, walk the food market on Güneşli Bahçe Sokak, and ferry back at golden hour. Evening at the Süleymaniye Mosque, the most beautiful Ottoman mosque in the city.
Istanbul, day four. Choose your interest: Dolmabahçe Palace for European-style Ottoman opulence, the Chora Church for Byzantine mosaics, or a half-day at the Princes' Islands. Late afternoon, fly to Cappadocia and arrive at your cave hotel in Göreme by early evening.
Cappadocia, day five. Book the hot-air balloon ride for this morning — pickup is at 4:30 a.m., the flight is at sunrise, and the experience is once-in-a-lifetime. Aim for the first day in case of weather cancellation. After breakfast, visit the Göreme Open Air Museum and the Uçhisar Castle for panoramic views.
Cappadocia, day six. Full-day tour of the Ihlara Valley (4 km hike along a green river canyon) and the underground city of Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı in the afternoon. These multi-level subterranean cities once sheltered up to 20,000 people.
Cappadocia, day seven. Morning at the Devrent and Pasabag fairy chimney valleys for landscape photography, lunch at a local mantı place, and afternoon flight back to Istanbul or home via Istanbul connection.
Where to stay. In Istanbul, Sultanahmet for first-timers (walkable to everything historic) or Karaköy/Galata for a more contemporary feel. In Cappadocia, Göreme is the most central and atmospheric; Uçhisar is quieter and slightly upscale. Cave hotels are warm in winter, cool in summer, and unforgettable.
Practical notes. Turkish lira is volatile; pay in lira whenever offered the choice. Carry small change for mosque donations and public toilets. Halal food is universal. Tap water in Istanbul is technically potable but most locals drink bottled. Tipping is around 10% at restaurants.
